Ali Robertson - D/deaf musicians experiment with haptic technology

Resident 9 to 14 December 2024

Ali Robertson, together with other D/Deaf musicians, will use this residency for research and development, experimenting with haptic technology - technology that can create an experience of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user:

'As a partially deaf musician and hearing aids user, I regularly have to choose between digital representations of sound, or to experience sound obscured. I will collaborate with Sonia Allori and Evie Waddell (D/deaf & Disabled musicians), testing out new Haptic technology to feel music, as opposed to "hearing" it. We'll look at how this can aid real time musical improvisation by D/deaf and profoundly disabled performers/participants, alongside real time captioning.

I will apply these new technologies to my facilitation practice, creating workshops for ALSN (Additional Learning Support Needs) and D/deaf participants to feel music (beyond hearing): New sensory experiences for learning, creativity and play, for both adults and young people.'
