Dorine Mugisha - Project Asili
Resident 9 to 13 September
In this residency, artist Dorine Mugisha will be working on Project Asili.
This project includes:
- Asili (meaning origins in Swahili), a solo piece where she explores her multicultural upbringing, navigating people, places, and institutions —a journey of self-discovery and acceptance. Themes include: body image, race, peer pressure, family expectations, her experiences in France, UK and Tanzania. The first iteration has been performed at Edinburgh Fringe (Scotland 2023), All Europe Waacking Festival (France 2023), Breakin Convention London (England 2023).
- A choreographic development including an ensemble of approximately seven dancers where she includes their experiences.
- A short film of her ‘coming home’ to Asili.
During the residency, Dorine Mugisha will be focusing on the development of the choreographic practice, welcoming dancers - including the Whacking Scotland community - to test ideas in studio. She has been invited to perform her piece at Haba na Haba Festival, Alliance Francaise and Muda Africa in Tanzania.
