Wee Wheel See - Taster Session

Wee Wheel See - Taster Session
Date 2nd Mar 2025 12.00pm - 1.30pm Price Free - ticket required Location Tramway View map Book by emailing wheelsee@gmail.com

Opportunity for children aged 5 – 10 with cycling skills and a love of movement to take part in Wee Wheel See—a magical outdoor performance alongside 20 professional dancers.

In 2023, dance artists Aya Kobayashi and Monika Smekot led a group of dancers on bicycles, lighting up urban spaces across Glasgow with Wheel See - a vibrant, free pop-up dance show. Dressed in distinctive yellow rain jackets, their performances energised streets, parks, and cycle paths with movement and joy. Now, Wheel See is returning - this time with young performers!

For the first time, children will join the project, bringing new energy and excitement to Queens Park this summer.

Want to be part of the magic? If you’re aged 5 - 10, love to move, and can ride a bike, Aya and Monika would love to hear from you!

Come to a taster session to find out more!
A chance for children to meet Aya and Monika, find out more about their work and Wheel See, and decide if they'd like to take part.

Session 1: Sun 23 February 12pm to 1.30pm
Session 2: Sun 2 March 12pm to 1.30pm

Booking is required. To secure your spot, please contact: wheelsee@gmail.com

Requirements
These taster sessions are open to any child who is interested, but please take a look at what we're asking of project participants before you come along:

Time Commitment
Rehearsals will be held every Monday after school hours, starting indoors and moving outdoors with bikes later in the year. Sessions will be led by Southside-based dance artists Aya Kobayashi and Monika Smekot in two groups of 10 children. While we understand it might not be possible to attend all dates, we are seeking commitment for most of the following dates:

* Monday Evening Rehearsals: (13 Sessions)
31 March, 21 and 28 April, 5 - 26 May, 2 - 30 June, 7 July
(at Queens Park Govanhill Church of Scotland, 170 Queens Drive, Glasgow G42 8QZ)

* Production Week: half day 15 -18 July

* Performance Days: 19 and 20 July

Dance?
No previous dance experience is required! All we need is a sense of joy and curiosity.

Cycling
Children must be able to cycle.
Most cycling will take place in Queens Park, where the final performance will also be held. While owning a bike and helmet is helpful, we will strive to remove any barriers to participation.

This project is supported by Creative Scotland, Tramway Beyond Walls, Merchant City Festival and The Work Room
