Constants & Variables is a task-based performance and experiment that considers ability and failure.
Gillian wears a white paper dress as she sits on a chair between two tables. On one table, a series of glass vials containing black ink that Adam has made. On the other, identical vials but empty. Using a metal spoon she begins to transfer the ink, across her lap, from one table to the other.
The task is complete once all the ink has been transferred from one set of glass vials to the other. Each drop spilled represents a measure of failure, indelibly marked on the white paper dress and table tops.
Does the first ink drop on the white dress mark a total failure, or just the first sign of an increasing degree of it?
Our hope is that the audience experience both schadenfreude and also empathy, enjoying the failure and willing the performer to succeed.
